水墨画 · Expressive Session
Two hours in which ink finds its own way across the page.
A relaxed afternoon exploring the soft gradients and deliberate restraint of ink painting — bamboo, open landscapes, and the quiet that comes from attending to a single brushstroke.
← Back to Studio Reserve a PlaceWhat this afternoon offers
You will leave with paintings that look nothing like what you expected — and feel more like you than you thought possible.
A different relationship to making
Ink painting does not reward tight control. What it gives instead is something looser and perhaps more satisfying — the pleasure of watching a mark find its form as you make it.
Two hours of genuine absorption
The session moves at a pace that pulls the attention inward. Many guests find it difficult to describe afterwards — not quite meditation, not quite art class, but something that holds its own particular quality.
Works to take home
You will produce several pieces during the afternoon. The ones you choose to keep will be dried, selected together, and wrapped to travel safely — paintings made by your own hand in a single sitting.
Where most people find themselves
There is a certain kind of person who is drawn to making things slowly and by hand — and who rarely makes time for it.
Life tends to fill with things that are useful, efficient, and quick to complete. Art falls away — not because the interest has gone, but because the threshold of beginning feels higher than it did.
Ink painting asks very little to begin with. You do not need drawing skills, colour knowledge, or any prior familiarity with the form. You need a brush, some ink, and a willingness to see what appears.
The Ink Painting Afternoon is designed to lower that threshold as far as it goes — to make the afternoon itself the reason to begin, rather than any outcome beyond it.
"The emphasis rests on observation and breath rather than precision. Each work finds its own character."
This session is suited to
- Those drawn to expressive, meditative approaches to art
- Guests who have tried the First Brush Session and wish to go further
- People who enjoy a longer, more immersive creative afternoon
- Anyone curious about the tradition of East Asian ink painting
Our approach
Ink painting taught through looking and feeling, not through rules and corrections.
The tradition of ink painting — sumi-e — is built on observation. The painter looks at bamboo not to record its appearance exactly, but to understand the character of a stem, the weight of a leaf, the way it moves in wind. Then the brush makes that understanding visible. This session follows that same order: look first, then paint.
Ink and water
Before the subject, we explore the material — how ink dilutes, how it pools, how a dry brush leaves a very different mark than a saturated one. This is the grammar of the form, and it is more satisfying to discover than to be told.
Bamboo as a first subject
Bamboo has been the traditional starting subject of ink painting for centuries — for good reason. Its structure is simple, its movement is expressive, and its forms invite the kind of brush gesture that teaches the medium quickly and well.
Landscape and open space
Later in the session, we move toward simple landscape forms — a suggestion of mountains, water, mist. The goal is not realism but mood: the feeling of distance, of atmosphere, of a particular kind of quiet.
Selecting what to keep
By the end of the afternoon you will have painted more than you expected. We look through everything together and identify the pieces that have something — a quality of presence that is hard to name but easy to recognise.
What the afternoon feels like
Two hours that move differently from most of the time in a day.
一
Arrival and settling
The studio is prepared before you arrive. Brushes of several sizes are laid out, ink stones are ready to grind, and sheets of paper are stacked within reach. The first few minutes are spent finding the right seat and feeling the weight of the brush.
二
Into the work
The first hour tends to involve a great deal of paper — exploration rather than finished pieces. The second hour brings something more settled, a greater ease with the brush and a clearer sense of what you are reaching for.
三
Closing and carrying home
The session closes with a quiet look at the afternoon's work. Pieces are left to dry and then wrapped. There is a natural unhurriedness to this part of the time together that tends to extend the mood of the session a little longer.
Sessions are held in small groups — no more than six guests — so the afternoon stays unhurried and guidance remains close at hand throughout.
Investment
A full afternoon in the studio, with everything provided and nothing to purchase separately.
The session is self-contained. Arrive with nothing more than curiosity and leave with several paintings of your own making.

The tradition behind the session
Sumi-e has been practised in Japan for over a thousand years. The session brings that lineage within reach of a single afternoon.
The approach taught at Tempest Drift Node draws on classical sumi-e method — the handling of ink density, the use of white space, the relationship between the stroke and what surrounds it. This is not adapted or simplified for accessibility. It is simply introduced at the beginning, with care and patience, as it has always been.
~2 hrs
Long enough to move past the initial unfamiliarity and into the actual experience of painting with ink
Up to 6
Guests per session, so the guide can attend closely to each person's work without hurrying through the group
Several works
Each guest typically produces a number of paintings across the afternoon, selecting their favourites to take home
Our commitment
We take the experience of each afternoon seriously, and we are glad to hear from you about it.
No session goes exactly the same way twice. If something about your afternoon felt unsatisfying, or if there is something you were hoping to explore that we did not reach, we would like to know.
We are a small studio. That means the person who leads the session is the same person you can write to afterward. There is no gap between the practice and the response.
You are welcome to write to us before the session with any question. We are happy to describe what to expect in more detail, or to help you decide whether this or another session might suit you better. Reach us at info@tempestdriftnode.com.
No drawing ability required
Ink painting and drawing are different disciplines. The brush, the ink, and the washi paper all behave in ways that Western drawing does not prepare you for — which means prior habits are rarely a benefit, and their absence is not a loss.
All materials are provided
There is nothing to purchase or prepare in advance. The studio supplies everything you will use during the session, including ample paper so that early, tentative marks do not feel precious.
Open to all levels
Whether you have never held an ink brush or have attended other sessions at the studio, the afternoon is designed to meet you where you are and move from there.
